The Galgenlieder, which Christian Morgenstern wrote between 1895 and 1905 for the Bund der Galgenbrüder, became particularly famous for its inherent wit and humour. In 1905, Morgenstern published them as a poetry volume with the Berlin publishing house Bruno Cassirer. Long disregarded by literary critics, Morgenstern packed many ambiguities and backdoors into them, the interpretation of which often did not succeed at first glance. He once described the poems in which he increasingly dissolved natural language as "Play - and seriousness=Stuff". Originally not intended for publication and only presented in private, the poems were so successful in a public performance, however, that Morgenstern published them as a book, thus boosting his fame.
