Bengt af Klintberg's piece Rop (Swedish, scream) is, like many of his works, based on his interest in myths, sagas and traditional customs. As a scientist and radio presenter, he was intensively involved with old and new folklore and combined this knowledge in his artistic work. Klintberg described this connection in his book The Cursive Scandinavian Salve, published by Something Else Press in 1967.

Rop was created in the context of the Fluxus movement and, like other Fluxus works, attracted little attention in Scandinavia. Fluxus concerts and performances were attended by few interested people and there was no perception of Fluxus as scandalous and transgressive, as it was in Germany or Denmark. Only larger events such as the Stockholm International Text-Sound Compositions Festival of 1967/68 made sound art of this kind known to a larger audience. The compilation Text-sound -compositions 2 AStockholm Festival 1968 compiles some works from the festival and was recorded at the Electronic Music Studio in Stockholm.
