The piece black holes/blue sky dreams is part of Jacki Apple's exploration of the dynamics of interpersonal relationships, the image and its reception. In the piece, Apple speaks, occasionally accompanied by restrained piano music, about the relationship of two people, from the initial flight of fancy to the increase in complexity to the reorganisation of the individuals within the relationship. Her last sentence, " it is an act of complicity", sounds like a summary of what she describes in a calm, matter-of-fact voice from a kind of meta-level for almost eight minutes.

Apple's inspirations for works like this drew on multiple sources. For example, disciplines such as archaeology, palaeontology, theoretical physics, earth sciences, Japanese aesthetics and cultural politics influenced her work. She explored environmental issues and the conflicted relationship between humans, nature and culture, historical, biological and geological themes, and politics and memory.
