Mauricio Nannucci's first works were image and sound poems that always appeared in red, yellow and blue, making it clear how important it is for Nannucci to explore colour.

Nannucci himself said: "It (the colour) becomes an integral part of the writing, which is not simply a string of words, but the material through which I express myself. Nevertheless, colour remains a primary given, after all, it is the first thing the viewer perceives. When you look at an installation, the first thing you see is the colour and how it is arranged; only once these features have been processed do you read the text. In this respect, the colour fulfils a double function."

The tone poem Rosso (Red) was also created in this context. The spoken and tape-recorded word Rosso was technically altered in many ways with the help of the tape machine. The sound material of the word was mixed and reassembled as well as acoustically superimposed in several sound loops so that distortions, echoes and volume fluctuations can be heard, which give the poem a special acoustic characteristic.

Mauricio Nannucci has dealt with the colour red in many works. In 1970, for example, he created a red painting with a red neon lettering "RED", also under the title Rosso. In 1964 he created a concrete poem on paper, written with a typewriter, consisting only of the word rosso. This was written directly next to and under each other until three times three square blocks were created in the square from one word.

The preoccupation with concrete poetry and electronic music as well as the use of the glaring fluorescent light of neon tubes reinforced the importance of colour within Mauricio Nannucci's artistic concept. The relationship between light, colour, form and sounds leads to sensual and virtual perceptions.
