The piece, Masquerage, is the result of Pierre Schaeffner's experimental work in the recording studios of Paris Radio. There, he used modern equipment, especially the tape recorder, to alienate tones and sounds to remount them, break up the traditional way of playing music and create new sound experiences. He coined the term musique concrète for this new kind of composition and founded it with a detailed theoretical concept for the re-creation of music production and perception.
