The great financial success of Harry Bertoia's furniture designs for the Hans Knoll company enabled him to devote himself almost exclusively to art from the 1960s onwards. He worked in painting and architecture, but it was his sculptures that achieved the greatest fame. A significant part of this is light and sound sculptures, with which Bertoia investigated the tonal properties of metal constructions. He designed them in such a way that they could be made to sound and manipulated by wind and other environmental influences as well as by human hands. He often used metal rods set up vertically to create the sounds and noises that clashed against each other. In a barn, which he converted into an atypical concert hall, he placed various of his sculptures and played them in a series of concerts. The recordings of the Sonambient series, a series of eleven record releases by Bertoia, were also made here. In most cases, the cover illustrations show a black and white image of the sculpture with which the recordings were made, and in a few cases, Bertoia playing the sculpture.

Some of the original records were found 12 years after Bertoia's death by one of his children on his estate in Pennsylvania and sold to collectors. These recordings were re-released on CD in 2015 as a high-quality edition together with a comprehensive booklet.
