Alison Knowles has been creating sound artworks since the late 1960s. One example is her work Bean Garden, a platform covered with beans that amplifies and alienates their movement sounds via microphones. The white bean plays a major role in many of her early sound works. The WDR under Klaus Schöning produced a four-part series with her in which the bean was the main protagonist. She received the Karl Sczuka Prize for this in 1982.

For her sound art, Knowles cooperated with John Cage and Joshua Selman, among others, with whom she created her last radio programme Bread and Water in 1994.
