The album Three Voices consists of two mezzo-soprano vocal pieces lasting about half an hour, initially framed by the introduction of a "level sound, 1 kHz wobble, 50 dB", which is led out by a 1:17 min silence of the piece titled "Auslaufrille".

Feldman's compositional idea was to have the piece performed by a single vocalist, accompanied by the recorded performances of the other two voices. Alternatively, the piece could be performed by three singers.

Two lines from Frank O'Hara's poem Wind (1957) are the only lyrics on the album; the vast majority of the tracks are sung without lyrics.

Feldman dedicated the work to musician Joan La Barbara and describes it as a tribute to his friends Philip Guston and Frank O'Hara.
