Between 1982 and 2012, the Dutch artist Paul Panhuysen, mostly together with Johan Goedhart, realised more than 250 installations worldwide in which strings arranged in a room played a decisive role. For the Long String Installations, he stretched sound-generating strings into the available (indoor or outdoor) space and produced sounds and tones. The set-ups were not only the basis for performance and sound but also and much more events with a constructivist and situationist background. Panhuysen played the strings with fingers dipped in resin with stroking and beating motions.

"In daily life we try to understand what is happening primarily by visual and auditory perception. In art these two senses are mostly kept apart. In the long string
installations, eyes and ears are equally important. This improves the understanding of reality and daily life." from Panhuysen's preface in his book Long Strings1982-2011.

The recording of the piece Circus, heard here, was made on 21.04.1985 at l'ancien Cirque d'hiver in Belgium.
