The compilation Biting Off The Tongue Of A Corpse - The Dial-A-Poem Poets, which includes the piece Cheerless Junkie Song by Helen Adam, originated from the Dial-A-Poem movement, which was started by John Giorno in 1969 and was active for several years in different places and with the help of different art museums. Poems by different poets were made available to listen to over the phone, and in the first five months of the project over a million people listened to them.

Helen Adams lecture was recorded at St. Marks Church in New York City on January 1st, 1975. The publication of the LP was made possible through the support of the Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines and the National Endowment for the Arts.
