ABC Days. An Archive of Social Distance

ABC [Artists’ Books Cooperative] / Wil van Iersel

ABC

Niederlande, 2020

Künstlerwebsite / Artist´s Website

Das Projekt der Artists’ Books Cooperative fand zwischen dem 11. Juni und 9. Juli 2020 statt.

The Artists' Books Cooperative project took place between 11 June and 9 July 2020. Twenty-nine international artists were invited to produce one book each. The prerequisite was to upload the book on a certain day during this period and make it online available. The result is a collection of 29 digital artist's books produced by the artists - sometimes in quarantine - in a time marked by the outbreak of Covid-19 and the worldwide protests against racism and police brutality. In times of social distance to prevent the transmission of the corona virus, artists' books in their digital form become generally accessible from home.

Das Projekt umfasst Künstlerbücher von / Artists‘ Books by:

Mishka Henner, Jonathan Lewis, Wil van Iersel, Dawn Kim, Hermann Zschiegner, Ofer Wolberger, Bruno Zhu, John Maclean, Travis Shaffer, Jonathan Schmidt-Ott, Jonathan Bragdon, Corinne Vionnet, Lotte Schröder, Studio The Future, Louis Porter, Duncan Wooldridge, Micheál O’Connell [Mocksim], Kurt Caviezel, David Horvitz, Sveinn Fannar Jóhannsson, Penelope Umbrico, David Schulz, Rahel Zoller, Jack Halten Fahnestock, Monika Orpik, Jan van der Til, Mohini Chandra, Alaa Mansour, EJ Major.

sync. an ongoing artistic journal in digitally published zines

Andreas Bülhoff

Buelhoff sync

Deutschland, 2018-19

sync is a post-digital zine series published in 2018 and 2019 with 50 issues each. The works from 2018 are by Andreas Bülhoff himself and the works from 2019 by different artists. The individual issues can be viewed digitally as well as in analog form, for which they have to be printed. Each work is based on a different number of individual pages, whereby the first and last two are always designed in the same way and contain the zine´s paratext. These pages enclose the respective artistic work, which can also be seen as graphic work. The artist's contributions to the journal edited by Andreas Bülhoff deal with the contexts of publishing, text and image, language and sign under post-digital conditions – also in terms of visual and experimental poetry and ascii or unicode art.

Like a synchronization element in mobile devices and storage media, sync can be understood as a language-controlled communication platform for the visualization, distribution and publication of artistic works.

Farbe

Paul Heimbach

Deutschland, 1997

Website /website

The work of the artist Paul Heimbach, who was born in Euskirchen in 1946 and died in Cologne in 2013, is based on a profound theory of color. On his website artype.de/Farbe he explains this theory in detail and makes it tangible through interactive applications, animations and short explanations.

In addition to color theory, Heimbach summarized his extensive ouevre on artype.de and presented his originally analogous works in a form that was progressive and technically advanced for the time.

BEELDEN VOOR ROTTERDAM

Harmen de Hoop

Hoop Beelden

Niederlande, 2002

The Dutch artist Harmen de Hoop has become known for his anonymous and illegal interventions in public space and for his photographs of absurd – but real – situations in public venues, which he thematically assembles into brochures and books. In the book BEELDEN VOOR ROTTERDAM, he juxtaposes photographs of these 'found' situations in Rotterdam with a city map on which the places where the respective situations took place are marked. In doing so, he addresses the behaviour of individuals in the city and their conflicts of interest in public space.

Harmen de Hoop not only deals with the behaviour of people in public space, but also with its rules and regulations. With his interventions and actions he also comments on social, political and philosophical issues.

Re Made Co.

Rebekah Modrak

Modrak ReMadeCo

USA, 2017

Künstlerwebsite, künstlerische Satire auf die Markenpräsentation von Best Made Co. / Website, artistic satire on the brand presentation of Best Made Co.

The project Re Made Co. by the New York based artist Rebeka Modrak is a satirical, socially critical intervention based on the brand identity of Best Made Co, a New York company that sells handmade axes. Modrak imitated the public appearance in all its facets, designed an image video (link to Vimeo) as well as a Facebook and Twitter presence in addition to an almost identical-looking website with an online shop and email newsletter. A shop window was also set up in New York City.

The company Best Made Co., which served as the basis, responded to the project with a legal request to shut down the website in order to avoid confusing potential customers of Best Made Co. The artist published the letter from the law firm on her website (rebekahmodrak.com/....pdf).

Rhizomebook

Jan an der Til

Jan van der Til rhizomebook

Niederlande

„I use the term 'rhizome' to describe and contextualize my ideas. A rhizome is a rootstock. The essence of a rhizome is that it has neither a beginning or an end; it is a complex of links and connections within a structure that does not lend itself to centralized control. Many wild plants, often seen as weeds, have rhizomes.“

Rhizomebook.com with the subtitle Rhizomebook a Book by Jan van der Til is a digital artist book and at the same time a website that functions as an archive, book, catalogue, gallery, portal, publishing site, shop and work. Rhizomebook will be continued in an ongoing process of development and is thus subject to a permanent process of change. The artistic idea behind the works or artist books of Jan van der Til is based on the rhizome. He writes about it:

"I use the term 'rhizome' to describe and contextualize my ideas. A rhizome is a rootstock. The essence of a rhizome is that it has neither a beginning or an end; it is a complex of links and connections within a structure that does not lend itself to centralized control. Many wild plants, often seen as weeds, have rhizomes."

Since Jan van der Til also refers to his website www.rhizomebook.com as A Book by Jan van der Til, this rhizome book must be understood in the sense of an interwoven system that cannot be represented in simplifying dichotomies, i.e. individual closed books. According to Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, a rhizome: "can be broken and destroyed at any point, it continues to grow along its own or other lines".2 Thus Jan van der Til's website as a book sprawls out into many other books and in these books it continues to grow.
